Gerrymandering is where the majority party draws district boundaries to benefit their own party and guarantee their re-election. Gerrymandering breaks up the voices of certain groups that disagree with the major party. “No taxation without representation” was a rallying cry against Great Brittan in the 1700s. If we wish to avoid the tyranny of King George III, we need to ensure that each citizen has an equal voice, even if we disagree on political issues.
In 2018, Proposition 4 passed, giving Utah an Independent Redistricting Commission. Ballot Initiatives become law; however, laws can be changed by the State Legislature. We need representatives who support a fully transparent commission to ensure that each voter has representation, regardless of their political persuasion.
